Make Sure Your Tree Lasts All Season Long | Laffey Real Estate

The holiday season is upon us, and as many Long Island homeowners embark on the tradition of setting up a live Christmas tree, our REALTORS® at Laffey Real Estate want to ensure you have the best experience possible. Here are some tips to help your tree stay vibrant and lush throughout the festive season.

  • Select the Right Tree
Begin by choosing a fresh tree. Look for one with vibrant green needles that don't fall off when touched. The fresher your tree, the longer it will last. Trees like Fraser or Noble firs are known for their longevity.

  • Make a Fresh Cut
Before setting up your tree, cut off about two inches from the base. This allows the tree to absorb water more efficiently. If you let your tree sit for more than a few hours after getting it home, make another cut before placing it in the stand.

  • Position Away from Heat Sources
Keep your tree away from direct sunlight, radiators, fireplaces, and heating vents. Heat will cause your tree to dry out faster. Consider the layout of your room and place the tree in a cooler spot.

  • Water Regularly
Water is the key to keeping your tree fresh. Always ensure that the water level never goes below the base of the tree. In the initial days, your tree might consume more water, so it's essential to check the water levels frequently.

  • Use LED Lights
When decorating your tree, consider using LED lights. They emit less heat than traditional bulbs, reducing the drying effect on your tree. They are also more energy-efficient and safer.

  • Limit Heavy Decorations
While it might be tempting to go all out with the ornaments, heavy decorations can damage the branches of your tree. Use lightweight ornaments and distribute the weight evenly across the branches to maintain the tree's natural shape.

  • Avoid Sprays and Additives
While there are many commercial additives and sprays available that claim to keep your tree fresher for longer, plain water works best. Avoid using additives in the water or sprays on the needles.

  • Recycle Your Tree
After the holidays, don't just throw your tree away. Many communities offer recycling programs that turn your used tree into mulch or wood chips. It's an environmentally friendly way to dispose of your tree.
