Outdoor Cleaning Tips for Homeowners - Laffey Real Estate

If you feel like your outdoor spaces constantly look messy, it's time to revamp your cleaning routine. A clean exterior helps your home look its best while making it more appealing to potential homebuyers. Our real estate agents encourage you to follow these hacks for cleaning your outdoor areas.

  • Invest in a Pressure Washer
A pressure washer is a smart addition to your arsenal of home cleaning products. Instead of relying on expensive, potentially dangerous chemicals, a pressure washer uses a powerful stream of water to clean your home's exterior areas.

Instead of scrubbing away grime and mildew by hand, let the pressure washer do the work for you. You can even adjust the power of your pressure washer so that it's safe to use on a variety of surfaces. Some of the surfaces you can clean with a pressure washer include vinyl siding, your deck or patio, your walkways, driveway, and brick (on a low setting).
  • Use Your Laundry Supplies for Your Outside Furniture
The same stain remover you use for your clothes effectively removes spills and stains from your outside furniture. Mix a gallon of hot water with one teaspoon of Tide powdered laundry detergent to create a powerful, cheap cleaning solution.

Make sure to get the powdered version, as it has powerful stain removers that make cleaning a breeze. You can apply a little of your powdered Tide concoction to old or set-in stains and let it sit for a few minutes. Otherwise, use a cleaning cloth to scrub your outdoor furniture with the Tide cleaning solution. Wipe the surface with a warm, wet rag to remove any residue.
  • Grab a Water Hose and Scrub Brush to Clean Your Outdoor Garbage Cans
Don't let smelly, dirty garbage cans detract from your home's outdoor spaces. Instead, grab your water hose and an extendable scrub brush. First, using a pair of rubber gloves, sweep out and remove any debris that's inside of the can. Then, spray the interior and exterior of the garbage can with your water hose.

Combine 4 cups of vinegar, half a cup of dish detergent, and a few cups of water to make your cleaning solution. Use your scrub brush to scrub the inside and outside of your garbage can. Turn the garbage can on its side, and lay down a garbage bag to catch any debris that's still in the can. Blast the surfaces with your water hose to remove all the dirt. Make sure all the water is out of your garbage can, and allow it to dry overnight before using it.
  • Let Degreaser Help Clean Your Grill
If your grill needs a thorough cleaning, a degreasing cleaner, like the yellow Mr. Clean, will help you get your grill looking like new in no time. Spray the degreaser liberally on your grill. Then, use a scrub brush to eradicate build-up and grime. Wipe the surface of the grill clean with a few paper towels.

All of the stuck-on food and grease will come right off. You can also use degreaser on your grill grates; just remove them and soak them in your sink before scrubbing and rinsing them.

Following a few simple tips can make it faster and more convenient to clean all your home's outdoor areas. Want to put your home on the market and search for a home with more outdoor space? Contact us to start the home-selling process!
