Visit the Past Around Long Island - Laffey Real Estate

Long Island is rich with history, with several sites that make ideal destinations for trips that are fun and educational. Theodore Roosevelt, as well as the Guggenheim and Vanderbilt families are part of the area's history, so you'll be able to visit their former homes as well as other interesting locations.

Our real estate agents suggest making a trip to visit the past at these historic Long Island destinations and making sure of any restricted hours due to COVID-19 before your visit:

  • Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium – 180 Little Neck Road, Centerport, NY 11721
Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium is located near Centerport homes for sale and is on a 43-acre estate, the centerpiece of which is a spectacular Spanish-Revival mansion of William Vanderbilt II. Take a tour of the mansion's living quarters and then visit its Marine Museum to see wild-animal habitat, dioramas, and more. Then head to the planetarium to watch a show, complete with a full-dome view and surround sound. Finally, finish your visit at the observatory, where you can look at the evening sky through telescopes that provide amazingly detailed views.

  • Sands Point Preserve Conservancy – 127 Middle Neck Rd., Sands Point, NY 11050
Located on the original Guggenheim Estate, Sands Point Preserve is also situated near Sands Point homes for sale. The site encompasses a 216-acre park along with historic mansions and a learning center. Hempstead House, a Tudor-style castle located on the grounds, exemplifies the opulence of "The Great Gatsby" era and was used as a summer residence by Howard Gould and later by the Guggenheims. You can also take a tour of Falaise, a cliffside French Norman-style mansion loaded with artwork, antiques, and furnishings. Educational and cultural programs are also offered, along with seasonal activities.

  • Raynham Hall Museum – 20 West Main St., Oyster Bay, NY 11771
Raynham Hall Museum, located near Oyster Bay homes for sale, was once the home of Robert Townsend, George Washington's intelligence operative. The home has been transformed several times over the years and now maintains its original Colonial appearance while keeping a Victorian rear addition. The museum also hosts special exhibits such as one that focuses on the mansion's 19th-century textiles, displaying samplers, household textiles, costumes, and more to show how needlework was an important activity for women of the time.

  • Sagamore Hill National Historic Site – 20 Sagamore Hill Rd., Oyster Bay, NY 11771
Considered to be President Theodore Roosevelt's "Summer White House," Sagamore Hill National Historic Site is a 23-room Victorian residence where Roosevelt lived from 1885 until his death in 1919. It's located near Oyster Bay homes for sale and is also the site of the Old Orchard Museum, which was the home of General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. The museum offers movies and exhibits that you're free to explore at your own pace, and the site also has 83 acres of natural surroundings and historic buildings to explore.

  • Oheka Castle – 135 West Gate Dr., Huntington, NY 11743
Oheka Castle was built by financier and philanthropist Otto Hermann Kahn, and the French-style home is the second-largest home ever built in the U.S. It's situated on a 443-acre plot of land on Long Island's highest point and is located near Huntington homes for sale. The castle has since been restored to its former grandeur and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, you can stay in one of its hotel rooms to experience its opulence firsthand.
