Long Island Home Buyer Habits

As first-time home buyers enter the Long Island real estate market, finding a new home is more of a challenge than they initially expected.  Often, house hunters start their search with a "wing it" mentality.  That's not always the best way to approach such a significant purchase in your lifetime.

Today, our real estate agents break down seven habits successful home buyers have in common so you can start your adventure in homeownership on the right path.

  1. Plan Ahead
Picture the type of home you want and create a plan on how to achieve your goal. Becoming pre-approved for a mortgage is a great first step.  It proves to sellers proves you're a serious buyer. Get preapproved for your mortgage before you start shopping for a home.

  2. Research Your Options
Before you start house hunting, research the neighborhoods where you're interested in living. Look into things that matter most to you like schools, crime rates, recreational activities--to pinpoint the areas you like best.

  3. Think Ahead
When tour homes, it is easy to get caught up in looking for the house that is perfect for you today. But a house is a long-term commitment – ideally, you will be living there for the next 5 to 10 years or more. Think about what the future might look like for you – after all, families grow, and kids get older. While you may not be able to predict everything life will bring your way, thinking ahead will help you make sure that you're picking a house that will work for you now and in the long run.

  4. Stay Flexible
While it's essential to think about what you want in a new home, you also need to be flexible when considering your options. Rarely does a home check off every box of your dream home. You may have to give up a few things you want to find the right place. Or you might find that what you imagined you would like doesn't work out exactly how you envisioned. Stay flexible and keep an open mind when you are looking at houses. You just might be surprised at what you end up liking.

  5. Be Realistic
Buying a home is very exciting. When you put in that first offer on a home, most people feel overjoyed. After everything you have invested in the house-hunting process, your hard work will finally pay off, right?

Don't get ahead of yourself – it's important to stay realistic. There may be multiple offers on the same home, and there is no guarantee that you will end up with the winning bid. You may not end up with a home immediately. Keep your chin up because another one is likely to come your way soon.

  6. Enjoy the Ride
Buying a home is a process that is a lot like a roller coaster. There will be highs, and there will be lows. Don't allow yourself to be overcome with stress when things get tough. Try to sit back and enjoy the ride. Trust the process. Know that your agent is working hard to help you find the best home for your family.

  7. Work with the Right Agent
Your real estate agent will be there with you every step along the way. It's essential that you find the right one that you can trust to be there whenever you need help.
