Long Island Landmarks: Montauk Point Lighthouse

Montauk Point Lighthouse Offers a Splendid Treat for Pharologists
Pharology is the study of lighthouses, and the unusual Montauk Point Lighthouse offers a great way to enjoy this historic hobby. The Montauk Point Light is found in the easternmost point of Long Island, just adjacent to the famous Montauk Point State Park.
The Montauk Point Light has a unique distinction: It was the first lighthouse to be constructed in the whole state of New York. In fact, it was the very first public works project undertaken within the newly-formed United States after the Revolutionary War!
Montauk Point is currently the fourth-oldest surviving lighthouse anywhere in the United States. Its light was most recently upgraded in 2001 and has a candlepower of about 290,000, making it visible for 17 nautical miles off the rugged Long Island coast.
The Lighthouse opens for visitors around the end of March each year and has varying seasonal hours. In general, you can expect to visit between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., weather permitting. When the grounds are open later than 4 p.m., the usual $8 parking fee is waived.
Admission ranges from $11 for adults to $8 for seniors and $5 for children up to twelve. Visitors, including kids at least 41" in height, have the opportunity to climb the lighthouse on most days.
That's not all: Montauk Point also hosts a full calendar of fun events. Lighthouse Weekend in August is a family-friendly romp that includes historical re-enactments of pirates and 1776-style militias. The annual Lighthouse Triathalon takes place in mid-July and registration is open.
While you're visiting Montauk Point Light, you won't want to miss out on beautiful Montauk State Park – after all, they're right next to each other! The park allows seasonal small game, waterfowl, and deer hunting with a proper state permit.
